100 Models will be chosen at Dec 11 for Project 2011

Forget the runway show and the catwalk. Say goodbye to fashion shows in which clothing is presented completely out of the context in which it was meant to be worn. Fashion Designers Bijou Champagne has a new vision, and he has created Project 2011 a two-week-long Beauty and Fashion Extravaganza to bring it to fruition.

“When a designer creates a garment,” explains Bijou, “it is meant to evoke a particular emotion in the wearer and the onlooker. Our vision is to showcase fashion in a setting that reflects this. How and where should the clothing be worn? How should it affect the community? How will a woman feel when she puts that item on? Project 2011 event will present fashions in context, in scenes meant to portray the emotion and relevance of the designs.”

Imagine, for example, a stage set with a detailed summer party scene, complete with swimming pool, barbecue and patio furniture. Models enter in swim suits and summer clothing, interacting with each other as though they’re enjoying a social event. Later in the day new props are brought out, and the scene turns into a cruise ship deck, where formally attired models are arriving for a dinner dance.

Various techniques will be used to add to the realism of the scenes, such as wind blowing, water falls, clouds, bright day, dark skies and more. Creative sound effects will be designed for each scene, to further enhance the visual impact and atmosphere created. All sound used during the show will be performed live (no DJs).

Extension of Japan Fashion Now

Due to the popularity of Japan Fashion Now – the first exhibition to explore contemporary Japanese fashion in all its radical creativity, from designer fashion to street style, including menswear – The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology (MFIT) will extend the exhibition through April 2, 2011, three months longer than originally planned.

"Japan continues to be on the cutting-edge – maybe even the bleeding edge – of fashion," says museum director and exhibition curator, Dr. Valerie Steele. "However, Japanese fashion today embraces not only the cerebral, avant-garde looks associated with the first wave of Japanese design in the 1980s but also a range of youth-oriented looks, such as Gothic Punk Lolita and Forest Girl styles. Some of the most interesting designers – including menswear designers – combine avant-garde and sub-cultural styles. Equally significant is the Japanese obsession (not too strong a word) with perfecting classic utilitarian garments, such as jeans and work wear."

Lamya Abedin launches Al Sultan Collection for Eid

One of the largest and longest lasting empires in history – the Ottoman Empire - has become the source of inspiration for Lamya Abedin’s latest Sultan Collection. In this collection Abedin presents 50 unique pieces that showcase the rich sartorial heritage of the Ottoman era.

“Cultures and countries have always been the catalyst to my creativity and the Ottoman Empire was an epitome of such inspiration for me with its ethnical diversities, confluence of the east and west and rich cultural vibrancy,” says Abedin, as she catches her breath during the photo shoot of her new Sultan Collection at Almaz by Momo at Mall of the Emirates.

The modern Maghrebin style restaurant becomes an apt backdrop to Abedin’s new collection, which is adequately kitschy as it is classical. Giorgio Armani contributed to the Arabesque look of the models and Jacques Dessanges of Paris did the hair styling.

Fashion Faceoff: Kim K. vs. Tyra Banks

Are you ready for another style throwdown? Faceoff regular Kim Kardashian puts her best foot forward for a battle with fashion mogul Tyra Banks after both were spotted sporting the same Rachel Roy sheath. This time it's stilettos at ten paces, because our candidates both look mighty fierce! Question is, who wore it better?

Kim Kardashian rocked the red carpet in the coral-colored gown last Friday at the 2010 Cosmetic Executive Women Beauty Awards in New York City. The "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" star paired her figure-hugging gown with a multi-colored Talita spiked clutch and Alti platform pumps, both from Christian Louboutin, and an elegant updo.
