Yellow Treehouse Restaurant

Doesn't this look cool? It's the Yellow Treehouse Restaurant by New Zealand based Pacific Environments Architects Ltd. (PEL) Appearing for all the world like an enormous chrysalis grafted onto a 40-meter-high redwood tree, this stunning architectural feat is constructed of plantation poplar slats, redwood balustrading milled at the site, and makes extensive use of natural lighting throughout.

A Treehouse Restaurant

Not far from the airport in Nana, Okinawa, Japan, there’s a rather unique eating establishment. It’s situated up in what appears to be a tree, but it’s not a tree, just a very realistic rendition made of concrete.

There’s an elevator in the trunk that takes the customers up to the restaurant. Even though I couldn’t determine the exact name of the place, I did come across some mixed reviews of the food served there. Apparently it’s pretty pricey too.

Unusual Grafted Trees

As a hobby, bean farmer Axel Erlandson shaped trees - he pruned, bent, and grafted trees into fantastic shapes and called them "Circus Trees."

For example, to make this "Basket Tree" arbor sculpture, Erlandson planted six sycamore trees in a circle and then grafted them together to form the diamond patterns.

Erlandson was very secretive and refused to reveal his methods on how to grow the Circus Trees (he even carried out his graftings behind screens to protect against spies!) and carried the secrets to his grave.

The trees were later bought by millionaire Michael Bonfante, who transplanted them to his amusement park Bonfante Gardens in Gilroy in 1985.

Since then, many other cool grafted trees have been created.

Baobab Trees

These strange and interesting trees originated in Africa. They store water in their trunks and tend to fluctuate in size depending on the time of year and rainfall amounts.

Aren't they cool looking?

Among villages in the Zambezi Valley it is believed that when the world was young the Baobabs were upright and proud. However, for some unknown reason they lorded over the lesser growths. The Gods then became angry and uprooted the Baobabs, thrusting them back to the ground where they landed upside down but continued to grow. Evil spirits are now said to haunt the sweet white flowers and anyone who picks one will be eaten by a lion. Drink water in which the tree’s seeds have been soaked though, and you will be safe from a crocodile attack!

Not only is it beautiful to look at, it has also been voted to be "one hundred must-be-preserved sounds of Japan" by the Japanese government.
