Buddha Pears

Buddha shaped pears growing in an orchard in Weixian county, Hebei province in September of this year.


Hao Xianzhang, a local famer, spent six years to perfect the process by growing the pears inside moulds. The pears cost around 50 yuan (7.32 USD) each.

A Cell Phone Made Of Wood!

One Russian man builds new cases for mobile phones from apple tree wood.



He fully disassembles the new devices and carve a piece-of-art wooden cases for them, each small part gets its own wooden case - the antenna, the sim-card, the battery.



A battery is hidden inside a wooden bar.



A sim-card comes in the smaller bar..



And antenna is also… wooden.



And the author believes that sooner or later gadget manufacturers would turn to wood too.

Square Watermelons

Japan has again shown off one of its greatest innovations
- square watermelons.

The round watermelon is unlikely to go out of favor, but there is the annoying problem of trying to cut the fruit when it keeps rolling around. And then there's the issue of how to fit a large round fruit into the refrigerator.

But 20 years ago a forward-thinking farmer on Japan's south-western island of Shikoku solved that problem. The farmer, from Zentsuji in Kagawa prefecture, came up with the idea of making a cube-shaped watermelon which could easily be packed and stored.

To make it happen, farmers grow the melons in glass boxes and the fruit then naturally assumes the same shape. Today the cuboid watermelons are hand-picked and shipped all over Japan.

But the fruit, on sale in a selection of department stores and upmarket supermarkets, sells for 10,000 yen, equivalent to about $83. It is almost double, or even triple, that of a normal watermelon.

"I can't buy it, it is too expensive," said a woman browsing at a department store in the southern city of Takamatsu.

Dewdrop Tree Tents

I thought these were pretty cool! These dewdrop shaped Treetents were designed by Dutch sculptor and designer Dré Wapenaar. Originally designed to ease the lives of tree-sitting activists, they also make excellent treetop retreats for campers, kids, and anyone soothed by an evening spent softly swaying among the branches. Each beautifully formed droplet attaches directly to a tree trunk and is roomy enough to sleep a family of four.

9,000 Miles To The Gallon - WOW!

The Microjoule competition car is an amazingly green vehicle that can "make the journey between New York and Los Angeles over three times on just one gallon of gas."

It has won Shell's Eco-Marathon every time since the car's original inception in 1992. "Amazingly the Microjoule doesn't have any fancy tricks — it's just an aerodynamic, lightweight one-seater that runs off gasoline, but runs for a long time."

Wow! That's nearly 9,000 miles on a single gallon of gas.
I want that car!!

A Car That Runs On Air?

Yes, it's true. The Air Car will be starting production soon, thanks to India 's TATA Motors in collabration with a France based company, Motor Development International (MDI). Why is it that a gasless vehicle that eliminates the reason to buy oil from foreign countries isn't already being manufactured here in this country? That's what I'd like to know!!



The $12,700 CityCAT, one of the planned Air Car models, reaches 68 mph, goes for a range of 125 miles. It will take only a few minutes for the CityCAT to refuel at gas stations equipped with custom air compressor units. MDI says it should cost only around $2 to fill the car up with 340 liters of air!



According to reports the first compressed air technology car or CAT car to be produced would be called the OneCAT, a basic car for urban and rural driving specifically designed to be driven in congested cities and priced in the $5,100 to $7,800 range. Wow! And it's cheap too!!



The French company has developed several prototypes of its car since it created the first engine 14 years ago (!!!). It was also expected to bring out a car based on the compressed air technology in 2002. But with speed and power being an issue and in an era when fuel prices were no big deal global carmakers did not risk commercialising CAT cars in the western world. (Stupid, huh?)



Tata Motors is expected to begin production of the air car this year. Spain and Australia are other countries which will also begin manufacture of air cars.

An Amazing Vintage Cadillac

From a very old copy of Mechanics Illustrated comes this remarkable piece:


If you saw Louis Mattar's car rolling along the streets of San Diego, CA, you'd probably consider it just another attractive automobile. But if you looked inside the car you'd find everything from a barbecue pit to a Hookah. And he might even let you take a shower just off the right fender.


Taking a puff on his Arabian water pipe, Mattar turns on the wire recorder for a playback of some dictation.


Here the engine compartment is filled with mechanisms. In foreground is the hot water reservoir. Mattar's hand rests on one of three pumps which operate the plumbing.


On the right, electric barbecue slides out along the back-seat armrest and Mattar prepars a snack for a guest. Lid pivots down and the "hot dogs" roas inside the container. Note the soda fountain with pull-out sink on the left.

How To Make A Bottle Raft

Never throw anything away! That's my motto! And hey, you'll be glad you kept all those 2 liter pop bottles, because today I'm going to show you how to make a raft... one that actually floats... on water... using those empty 2 liter bottles.

Ready? Here ya go!



First you're going to need quite a lot of 2 liter pop bottles - WITH LIDS - very important that they have lids. If you want to "bless" them, you can line them up under a christmas tree. :)



You're also going to need a fair amount of duct tape plus a generous portion of patience. I'm not sure how they got those bottles to cooperate with the tape. But if they can do it - I'm sure you can too.



Looks like they've put the bottles on a piece of plywood, and taped them on. Be sure to get it WELL TAPED! My thinking is, the more tape you use, the better off you'll be. I'm not sure if the yellow tape has "special properties" or not, so get some yellow tape just in case.



Now top it off with an appropriately sized piece of styrofoam. That piece in the picture looks like some kind of ceiling panel. I didn't know ceiling panels were waterproof... so I'm thinking it's got to be styrofoam.



All taped together and ready to go! Clearly, when getting ready to try out your raft, shirts are optional.



Oh Cool! It floats! Check out his paddle... or is it a pole? Notice that the plywood side is the "top" while the styrofoam side is on the "bottom."



When I first saw this series ... I fully expected to see him sinking into the lake at the end. But no... it looks like this thing is actually "sea worthy." How cool is that?
